HTS degaussing cable apply to naval vessel

AMSC manufactured the first same proportion HTS degaussing cable of the world. Degaussing cable is mainly used in naval vessel to reduce their magnetic field, thus avoiding them to be detected by magnetic sensor or magnetic mine. HTS degaussing cable uses 142 foot HTS wire provided by AMSC. Degaussing cable can transport 4100 Amps current, which achieves general level of conventional copper degaussing wire for vessel using, however, the voltage can be lower than 0.5 V, or 1000 times lower than copper conductor. The most important thing is the weight of HTS degaussing cable is only 20% of general copper conductor degaussing cable. So, the advantages in weight and volume of HTS degaussing cable will cut down the installation cost by 40% than the copper conductor degaussing cable. Besides, as the characteristic of zero resistance, HTS degaussing cable can operate the HTS degaussing system with very little energy.
According to project engineer of US Naval Surface Warfare Center, using HTS degaussing wire in degaussing system instead of copper wire will reduce wire weight and wire turns number. HTS degaussing wire of AMSC can transfer 150 times current than copper wire with the same diameter. For the typical naval vessel such as LPD 17 amphibious landing ship, using degaussing system with HTS degaussing wire will not only decrease the weight, also the installation cost. Degaussing cable system will be applied in all the naval vessels all around the world.
